TODAY IN HISTORY: INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING.

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. International days remind of social issues we may often overlook or forget.
Today's day in history is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, which is marked on the 26th June every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
People who use drugs and those struggling with addiction face a multitude of challenges: the harmful effects of the drugs themselves, the stigma and discrimination they endure, and often, harsh and ineffective responses to their situation.
With the United Nations continued observance of World Drug Day, it encourages individuals, communities, governments, schools and various organizations to not only educate young people about the dangers of drug use, but also promote healthy ways to deal with life’s problems without turning to drugs.
This event was founded as an expression of the determination of the UN to cooperate and strengthen their actions to create a society that is free of drug abuse.
Drug abuse carries way more worse than good, especially now where various drugs of different types have been pushed to the public. The most recent ones being synthetic drugs.
By celebrating World Drug Day, there is the awareness of impacts of drugs on humans and how it can be better avoided in the long run.
You can support this end goal by not just being a voice of reason but also a voice of change to those struggling with drug addiction.
